Introduction

Ross Bagpipe Reeds Pty.Ltd. has been in existence for nearly 14 years now, offering tried and proven products to the piping world. The prime objective has been to offer a better means of producing the highest quality stable tone from bagpipes. We have achieved this by analysing the existing methods at the time, then looking to see if a better method could be employed to achieve a higher quality with much greater stability, which has always been the source of frustration for pipers worldwide. This process lead to the development of the world's first plastic drone reeds, and the world's first canister pipe bag, both of which are unique and original ideas. It is fair to say that both these innovations have had their fair share of impact upon the piping world, and have played a part in the success of many bands and solo players worldwide, including such acclaimed bands as the Victoria Police Pipe Band and Western Australia Police Pipe Band, 1998 World Champions in Grade 1 and Grade 2 respectively. The Victoria Police Pipe Band has strongly endorsed our products for many years, and this band produces arguably the finest and most stable tone ever produced from a pipe band, and we are happy to acknowledge that our products have been a vital component of that achievement. In addition to the above Australian bands, bands such as The 78th Fraser Highlanders , Scottish Power, Polkemmet, and St. Laurence O'Toole Clondalkin are just a sample of the growing number of high profile bands throughout the world who have discovered the benefits of the Ross Canister Pipe.

The Zipped Canister Bag

This bag has been designed with dedicated Pipers’ requirements in mind. The basic concept of the breathable canister system is that the air must pass through the canister, which is filled with drying granules, pprior to reaching the reeds. This offers Pipers the best available means of controlling moisture.

The canister, which is the major part of  the entire system, is accessible via the air-tight zip fitted along the bottom  seam of the bag. A reserve canister is supplied with each bag for quick change  over situations. This can be done quickly by unzipping the bag, and exchanging  the used canister with the spare, then rezipping the bag and continuing on with  your playing. The granules are reusable indefinitely, by drying them out in a  microwave oven for a few minutes. Through the use of the zip, the bag can also  be left open to dry out after long sessions of playing and particularly playing  in cold and/or damp conditions.

Now used as part of the Ross Canister Bag, the air-tight zip makes the task of opening and sealing the bag as simple and convenient as it can get. The zip is a totally tried and tested product for over 40 years now. They are used extensively in very testing conditions, where the demands are very much greater than in bagpipe bags, so one can rest assured that we are using a highly reliable zip which IS absolutely air-tight. The Zipped Bags are available in 3 sizes, small, medium or large, and also can be made to measure for those pipers wanting a specific size.

The Clamped Canister Bag

The Clamped Canister Bag was the first bag to seriously address the moisture problem that confronts the vast majority of pipers throughout the world. It is the economical canister bag that offers all the same moisture control of the Zipped Bag but at a lower outlay.

Its function is precisely the same as described for the Zipped Bag on the Zipped Bag page, with the only exception in design being the aluminium back clamp used to effect an air-tight closure of the bag. The clamp is constructed from a channelled section of aluminium with an aluminium bar that is screwed tight by thumb screws to close each side of the bag material at the back of the bag. The clamp is a long-time proven method of effectively sealing the bag after accessing the inside to dry out the granules in the canister, or exchange the canister for the reserve one provided.

The Clamped Canister Bags are available in 3 sizes, small, medium and large.
